How It Works
A diastema (tooth gap) can be closed with several treatments depending on the gap size and your goals. Bonding is the fastest and cheapest option for small gaps. Veneers give the most aesthetic result. Orthodontics (Invisalign or braces) permanently move teeth and fix multiple alignment issues.
The Formula
Treatment Cost = Base Cost x Number of Gaps (bonding/veneers) or flat fee (ortho)
Out-of-Pocket = Treatment Cost x (1 - Insurance %)
Out-of-Pocket = Treatment Cost x (1 - Insurance %)
Variables
- Bonding — Composite resin fills the gap, 1 visit ($300-$700/gap)
- Veneers — Wider veneers on both teeth flanking gap ($1,700 x 2)
- Orthodontics — Move teeth together permanently ($3,000-$7,000)
Example
A 2mm gap between front teeth: bonding costs $500 (1 visit), veneers cost $3,400 (2 visits), Invisalign costs $4,000 (6 months).
Tips
- Gaps under 2mm are ideal for bonding — fast, cheap, and reversible
- Gaps over 4mm typically need orthodontics for a stable, long-term result
- Bonding on gap teeth needs replacement every 5-7 years
- If you have other alignment issues, Invisalign fixes the gap plus other problems
- Frenectomy (removing tissue between front teeth) may be needed to prevent gap recurrence
