How It Works

A palatal expander widens the upper jaw to correct crossbites, crowding, and breathing issues. It works best in children under 14-16 because the palatal suture has not yet fused. Adults may need surgically assisted expansion (SARPE).

The Formula

Total = Appliance Cost + (Follow-Up Visits x $75)
Out-of-Pocket = Total x (1 - Insurance %)

Variables

  • Removable — Patient-worn appliance for minor expansion ($1,000-$2,500)
  • Fixed RPE — Bonded to molars, turned daily with a key ($2,000-$3,500)
  • SARPE — Surgically assisted for adults with fused sutures ($5,000-$10,000)

Example

A fixed RPE ($2,750) with 8 follow-up visits ($600) = $3,350 total. With 50% insurance, out-of-pocket is $1,675.

Tips

  • Earlier treatment (ages 7-10) is easier and more predictable than later
  • Expect a gap between front teeth during expansion - it closes naturally
  • Expansion takes 2-4 weeks of turning, then 3-6 months of stabilization
  • Some discomfort and pressure is normal for the first few days after each turn
  • Expansion often reduces or eliminates the need for tooth extractions later
